Can the cloud really be green? Doubts about the “Green Cloud” have surfaced recently in regards to the quantity of energy consumed and carbon emissions identified with cloud computing. These doubts, however, seem to focus on a more traditional view of cloud computing’s infrastructure or the use of fossil fuels as an energy resource. But what happens when these issues are addressed?
One of the enablers of cloud computing has been the trend towards server consolidation. IT organizations worldwide are evaluating their server resources to determine the most efficient usage models, which includes reducing the total number of servers or server locations that their organization requires. As they make these decisions on consolidating their applications onto fewer servers, IT managers are also looking at the option of moving their applications to either public or private clouds.
