UK Government Turns Carbon Reduction Plan into Green Tax
he UK government announced last week that it now plans to keep revenue raised from the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme instead of recycling the money via rebates to participating companies, according to Data Center Knowledge.
The government says the sudden decision to restructure the program and keep the money is due to its signficant budget deficit.
In its announcement, the UK government said the $1.57 billion per year it collects from CRC revenues would now go to "support the public finances (including spending on the environment), rather than recycled to participants."
Under the program's structure, companies and organizations that use over 6,000 MWh of energy a year are obligated to register and buy carbon credits to match the amount of energy they use each year.
