The big concern going into a recession is whether you'll keep your job, your staff and all the perks that you had before--probably in that order. The big concern coming out of the recession is what your job will look like during the next round of growth.
This is true for most sectors and job titles, but in the CIO's world it's particularly acute because nothing changes as fast as technology. In Hollywood, the quickest way to make a movie look dated is to include a scene with an old computer or an old tape or disk library. Old technology doesn't age well, and neither does the mindset that accompanies it. Moreover, no corporate job is so closely associated with technology as the CIO's.
