Why CIOs should take note of a seemingly insignificant chip maker acquisition. The proposed purchase of Chartered Semiconductor, a Singapore-based semiconductor foundry, by a Middle Eastern investment group may sound far removed from the everyday buzz of the data center and the CIO's world, but reality may prove to be quite different.
Just to set the stage, Advanced Technology Investment Co. (ATIC) is wholly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi. It has a subsidiary known as ATIC International Investment Co., which is the group buying Chartered. If the name sounds unfamiliar, think of it as the same company that established a joint venture with Advanced Micro Devices ( AMD - news - people ) for its foundry business, now called Globalfoundries.
