1. Computers are both a good news and bad news story when it comes to sustainability and energy. First, the good news. Computers are a boon to the environment. Rack-mounted servers consume about 2.5 percent of all of the electricity in the U.S., but consider the myriad of services -- email, Twitter, online shopping, banking -- you get from them.
