    As Internet use and cloud computing swell, companies are using huge amounts of energy to keep data centers, which store and process information in banks of servers, running at full capacity. To ensure they meet the expectations of users who demand an instantaneous response to the click of a mouse, companies waste 90 percent or more of the electricity they use.

    Is the energy used worth the speed and ease we now have on the Internet, or should we wean ourselves from the idea that information and a fast connection should be available instantly, at all times?
