More Power to Google - by Paul Bernier
Views and Opinions on Green IT (Jan 29 2010)

Google Inc. made its name in the search and online advertising space. But it’s since become known as a company that’s attacking virtually every aspect of communications. And now it’s trying to get into the power space too.
According to recent reports, Google is seeking permission from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to buy and sell electricity.
Of course, Google has many gianormous data centers. So getting involved in the energy space in this way could help the company address its own energy needs. But is there something more to this story?
Clearly, if the company receives the authority it’s requested, it would also be able to sell transmission and fuel to others.
And a new type of energy trader like Google could create an entirely different dynamic in the energy, smart grid, and green data center arenas.
I’m imagining a site in which those who own data centers, or lease space in them, could sign up for a Google App that would enable them to check rates and purchase energy accordingly. But, then again, there are those that would argue an entrée into the energy sector could give the already influential Google too much power.
