Outsourcing to be key trend in data centers going forward - By Paula Bernier

The data center space is seeing a lot of consolidation – meaning both the combination of multiple data center locations into mega sites and the aggregation of various applications on single servers. But despite these trends, which point to a move toward more cost-conscious operations, data centers will continue to be a significant area of investment in the near future.
"The data center promises to be a major area of investment and change over the next two years, touching everything from security to servers to storage,” says Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data at Infonetics Research.
Indeed, as with so many other areas of communications, security is a leading concern for companies that operate or other use data centers as part of their businesses. In fact, according to Infonetics survey respondents, IT and physical security upgrades are the No. 1 change planned in the next couple of years.
Not surprisingly, virtualization was noted as another important trend relative to the data center. The move to much faster Ethernet switching within data centers is another key development we’ll see as time progresses, notes Machowinski.
But it is outsourcing, or leasing, data center space that shows the greatest potential for growth within the next two years, Machowinski reports, noting this model is not widely used today.
Of course, outsourcing data center space is yet another way businesses of all stripes can move beyond focusing on the back-office-type operations of their enterprises and instead direct their attentions to the sales, marketing, customer care and/or new development efforts that will best position them for today and the future.
