DFT Sees Slower Leasing in Several Markets

Leasing at new data centers built by developer DuPont Fabros Technology has been slower than expected in several key markets, the company said today, DuPont Fabros said it remained confident in the long-term outlook for the data center market, but that given the current pace of leasing it is lowering its revenue guidance for 2012.
Shares of DuPont Fabros (DFT) were down by about 6 percent in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange, declining $1.49 a share to $24.01. Shares had been as much as 9 percent lower in after-hours trading last night.

DuPont Fabros Leases Space in NJ, Santa Clara

Wholesale data center developer DuPont Fabros Technology has signed new customer leases at its data centers in New Jersey and Silicon Valley, the company said today.
Two new tenants have signed leases totalling 1.71 megawatts of critical power – about 8,120 square feet of raised-floor technical space – at the NJ1 facility in Piscataway, New Jersey. In California, a single tenant has leased 2.28 megawatts of power (11,000 square feet of space) at the SC1 facility in Santa Clara.

NASDAQ Powers Up Its Colo Offerings

High-speed trading customers are packing more equipment into their cabinets, and thhe operator of the NASDAQ stock exchange is responding with a new high-density enclosure for companies that colocate their servers in the NASDAQ data center.
The NASDAQ OMX Group today introduced the Super Cab, a cabinet that vents the hot exhaust air from servers into a custom cabinet chimney, allowing it to cool customer workloads requiring up to 17 kilowatts of power within the NASDAQ OMX Data Centert. The solution also reduces cabinet-to-cabinet connectivity latency and maintains reliability with fully redundant power capacity.

Griffin Capital Buys AT&T Wireless Data Center

Griffin Capital has purchased AT&T Wireless’ National Network Operations Center in Redmond, Washington, the company said recently. The facility was bought as part of Griffin’s acquisition of a three-building, 155,830 square foot office and data center campus fully leased AT&T Wireless. The property also houses AT&T Wireless’ next-generation research and development labs.
AT&T Wireless, the country’s second-largest cell phone service provider, has continuously occupied the property since it was built in 1995 and over the past three years invested more then $50 million of its own capital to upgrade the facility. with plans for additional investment.

Nicira Targets the Virtual Data Center Network

Networking startup Nicira today unveiled its Network Virtualization Platform (NVP), along with an impressive lineup of companies using its product. Nicira was founded by key players in the development of the OpenFlow protocol for software-defined networking.
But the company’s approach to networking goes beyond OpenFlow. Its software platform manages a network abstraction layer, which lets users create virtual networks that operate independently of the underlying physical network hardware. Nicira says its software will work with any network hardware from any vendor and is hypervisor agnostic, working with VMware ESX, Linux/KVM, Xen Server and Microsoft’s HyperV.

Nebraska Woos Huge ‘Project Edge’ Data Center

Officials in Nebraska are seeking to pass a package of economic incentives to land a huge data center known only as “Project Edge,” which could result in a $1.2 billion data center campus. It’s the latest example of “code name” projects in which large companies seek to remain secret as they scout locations for data centers.
“It’s quite an extraordinary investment,” Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman, who has been involved in the recruitment effort, told the Omaha World-Herald. “We’re one of the finalists, and I think we have an outstanding opportunity to have this occur.”

Facebook’s $1 Billion Data Center Network

Facebook has invested more than $1 billion in the infrastructure that powers its social network, which now serves more than 845 million users a month around the globe. The company spent $606 million on servers, storage, network gear and data centers in 2011, and expects to spend another $500 million this year, Facebook revealed Wednesday in its filing for an initial public stock offering.
The company’s massive armada of servers and storage must work together seamlessly to deliver each Facebook page, the company said. “Loading a user’s home page typically requires accessing hundreds of servers, processing tens of thousands of individual pieces of data, and delivering the information selected in less than one second,” the company said.

Several leading data center providers reported this week that they have competed audits of their facilities: DuPont Fabros Technology – Wholesale data center developer DuPont Fabros Technology (DFT) today announced that the control procedures for its data centers that required the certification have been found to be suitable in design and operating effectively according to Service Organization Control Reports (“SOC1″). IO – Modular data center specialist IO said the company has completed a SSAE 16 Type 2 audit covering three operational data centers – IO New Jersey, IO Phoenix and IO Scottsdale.

Digital Realty Sees Growth, Investment in 2012

Data center developer Digital Realty Trust appears confident about the industry’s prospects for 2012. The company, which is the largest owner of data center properties, expects revenue to improve at least seven percent over its 2011 performance. It also reported strong leasing for the fourth quarter of 2011.Digital Realty (DLR) now projects funds from operation (FFO) for 2012 in a range between $4.34 and $4.48 per share. That translates to expected FFO growth of 7.2 percent to 11.4 percent over the 2011 range of $4.02 to $4.05 a share. The company said it expected to spend $300 to $400 million acquiring income producing properties, and invest between $700 million and $900 million in redeveloping data center space.

Datapipe Reports Strong Global Growth

Managed hosting provider Datapipe said today that its net growth in 2011 exceeded that of 2009 and 2010 combined.
Datapipe saw its strongest growth in Europe and Asia, where business grew at an annual rate of more than 50 percent. Adoption of Stratosphere, the company’s Enterprise Cloud Platform, more than doubled for the third consecutive year, the company said. Amazon: 762 Billion Objects Stored on S3 Cloud

Amazon doesn’t release financial data about its cloud computing operations, but it periodically shares some numbers about the scale of its operations. How fast is Amazon Web Services growing? The number of objects stored on the company’s S3 cloud storage service tripled in the 12-month period between the final quarters of 2010 and 2011. S3 now stores an amazing 762 billion objects, according to AWS cloud evangelist Jeff Barr.
By any measure, that’s extraordinary growth. That total works out to 108 objects for each of the earth’s 7 billion citizens. And how many operations that have been operating as long as S3 have 290 percent annual growth?

NL-ix Plans ‘Super-Core’ at Equinix Amsterdam

The Internet exchange NL-ix will establish a “super-core-site” with up to 100 Gbit/s port- apacity in the new Equinix AM3 facility in Amsterdam, the companies said today. The new node will enhance traffic performance for both NL-ix and Equinix customers, enabling them to peer across the NL-ix infrastructure to improve performance and reduce costs.
Scheduled for completion in Q3 2012, the 6,400 square meter (68,000 square foot) AM3 facility is located in Amsterdam Science Park which, with over 250 networks, is one of the highest-density network zones in continental Europe.

Facebook Has Spent $210 Million on Oregon Data Center

Colocation provider Telehouse has teamed with its parent company, KDDI, to launch a portfolio of enterprise cloud solutions, the company said this week. Russo Gets Approval for NJ Data Center Project

Russo Development has gained approval to move ahead with Somerset Technology Park, a planned data center campus in Somerset County, New Jersey. The site near I-287 among a cluster of data center properties about 35 miles from midtown Manhattan is the company’s ninth data center development in New Jersey. Russo expects to begin site development activities “in early 2012.”
The property is a greenfield site that Russo says can support more than 1.3 million square feet in multiple facilities, and features electrical power capacity of 100 megawatts from multiple 69kV feeds. The site is also within a half mile of two large water plants providing capacity or chilled water cooling. Russo has designed the complex to meet the security needs of Russo’s clients in the financial services industry, with enhanced berms and landscaping, perimeter fencing, and security gates with guard houses.

Google Spent $951 Million on Data Centers in 4Q

Google invested nearly a billion dollars in its Internet infrastructure in the last quarter of 2011, recording capital expenditures (CapEx) of $951 million. Google’s CapEx spending was about $271 million more than in the third quarter of 2011, when it invested $680 million in its infrastructure.
The increase is likely due to early work on a significant expansion of Google’s international data center network. In recent weeks the company has announced four new data center projects, including three new facilities in three markets in Asia (Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong) and a new data center in Dublin.
