How Eaton's Green IT Initiatives Trim the Bottom Line
Across all industries, companies have long been touting the green benefits of their products. To a lesser extent, companies are taking a serious look at their own environmental impacts and finding ways to reduce their footprints. And the IT industry has been working to move its green impacts beyond the data center and office desktop out to the larger world of business operations -- a move called, variously "IT for Green" or "Green IT 2.0."

Viridity EnergyCheck Takes the Pulse of Data Centers' Energy Efficiency
Even in this age of highly virtualized data centers, the vast majority of servers remain underutilized: In some cases, 80 percent of servers are under 10 percent utilized. IT professionals that are working in virtualized environments may not even be aware that they're missing one of the key benefits of virtualization. But a new, free application from Viridity aims to give data center owners and operators a quick but thorough analysis of just how much load their servers are carrying.

IBM's New Data Center Brings Home the Gold
IBM chose an existing building to house what would become the company's most technologically advanced green data center. Construction on the newly-opened facility reused 95 percent of the building's original shell, while the company recycled 90 percent of the original building's materials. Re-use of the building helped land LEED Gold certification for data center, which the company expects to save more than $1 million in its first year of operation, IBM has announced. "Through local sourcing, recycling and tremendous innovation we've been able to achieve a significant milestone for the company and further solidify IBM's commitment to Research Triangle Park," Bob Greenberg, IBM's senior state executive in North Carolina, said in a statement. "Data centers have always been a critical part of IBM 's global delivery network and this facility, our cloud computing data center, has furthered IBM's ability to deliver innovation and ...

VMWare Maps the Path to Pervasive, Green Cloud Computing
At the annual VMWorld conference in San Francisco, the titular company laid out its vision for "IT as a Service," a conceptual shift that would move IT departments to providing efficiency and availability for data and compute power, and put the cloud at the core of corporate computing platforms. The products rolled out include: VMware vCloud Director, which enables IT departments to create "virtual data centers;" VMware vShield, a security system for virtualized and cloud computing environments, and VMware vCloud Datacenter Services, which creates "hybrid clouds" that give companies the ability to use both private, internal cloud computing systems and secure external clouds as needed.

CapGemini Opens 'World's Greenest' Data Center
Capgemini next month will open what it calls the "world's greenest" data center in Swindon, and appropriately enough will be hosting the U.K.'s Environment Agency as its first tenant. The 33,000-square-foot facility, nicknamed "Merlin," boasts a Power Usage Effectiveness ratio of 1.08 (according to eWeek), meaning it uses much less than half as much energy per square foot as the industry average PUE of about 2.5.

Microsoft: Green IT Means More Than a Low PUE
Power Usage Effectiveness has become the de facto standard for green IT around the world, but a new white paper from Microsoft says that PUE shouldn't be the only focus of an IT department. PUE -- the ratio of a data center's energy use that goes to computing instead of HVAC or lighting -- was developed by The Green Grid to move the IT industry toward more efficient operations. But according to Dileep Bhandarkar, a Distinguished Engineer in Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Global Foundation Services, PUEs can be a misleading figure because it is inconsistenly reported.

Most Servers in Data Centers Vastly Underutilized
A recent meeting in Toronto generated a slew of tips and advice to help organizations make their IT operations greener. Most servers in data centers operate at a 4 percent utilization rate, making these energy-guzzling facilities prime targets for improved efficiency. And when it comes to cutting energy use further, employee practices are no match for the results that can be achieved by power management and other central-control systems. These are some of the lessons learned at a recent green IT meeting held by Greening Greater Toronto and the Ontario Institute of the Purchasing Management Association of Canada. The groups released findings (PDF) this week from the meeting, originally held in May.

A Three-Step Plan to Using IT to Reduce Emissions
IT increasingly plays a leading role in business operations from data centers to shipping logistics, as well as enabling companies to reduce business travel for meetings and commuting. And the rise of greenhouse gas emissions laws like the U.K's Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency program makes an even stronger case for incorporating IT into every level of the enterprise. The confluence of IT's increasing role in business and the rise of carbon legislation opens up a number of opportunities for IT departments. In order to seize on those opportunities, Greenstone Carbon Management this week laid out the steps that IT professionals and resellers can use to put technology to work on meeting legislative requirements for carbon emissions, while also cutting costs from energy used across any business.

New IBM Servers Aim to Manage Vast Amount of Data in the 'Smarter Planet'
With the growth of smart grid systems around the world, as well as the increasing ability to measure and manage data from every element of business, comes a vast increase in demand for computing power. IBM this week released its next-generation systems that are explicitly designed to capture the astronomical jump in data that smart grid applications bring to the table. The company estimated that an energy company that currently reads its meters about one million times per day today could see that number jump to 85 million daily data inputs with widespread adoption of smart meters and gadgets.

Energy Star: Coming in June to a Data Center Near You?
By this summer, your data centers may be able to earn an Energy Star certification, if the final stages of work underway at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conclude as planned. At The Green Grid's data center conference in San Jose last week, Energy Star manager Alexandra Sullivan told attendees that the certification could be ready as early as June. Once the certification is launched, companies will be able to take an online test to rank how efficient their facilities are. Companies that score in the top 25 percent will then be eligible for an audit by the EPA in order to earn the Energy Star label.

Virtualization Adoption is a Mile Wide, Inch Deep
Virtualization may have been one of the hottest technological innovations of the last decade, but a combination of concerns are keeping it from planting deep roots in the corporate world. A report released this month by CDW surveyed the virtualization landscape, finding that, although 90 percent of businesses say they've adopted virtualization, but only in small numbers of servers: Even companies that reported they'd "fully deployed" their virtualization plans had done so on 37 percent of their server infrastructure.
