Big Data In the Enterprise: A Lesson Or Two From Big Brother

A recent survey conducted by Capgemini and the Economist Intelligence Unit raises questions on how “data-driven” today’s enterprises truly are. The study shows that companies and organizations are struggling with the enormous volumes of data – often poor quality data – that they collect and create, and many are wrestling to free data from organizational silos.

Are Cloud Providers Absentee Landlords On Cybersecurity?

Would you trust your sensitive corporate data in the hands of a stranger? Recent Amazon and Apple iCloud experiences tells us that cloud security across the board, needs to be enhanced, now, not later. Taking a look and understanding security strategies and responsibilities from both cloud providers and customers can help to prevent further failures.

Google Plans New $300M Data Center In Council Bluffs, Iowa

Google plans to invest $300 million to build a new data center in Council Bluffs, Iowa, boosting its total investing in the city to about $900 million, the AP reports. The company said the new center would add about 50 new jobs to the city, which is across the Missouri River from Omaha, Nebraska. Google already employs about 200 people at an existing $600 million data center in Council Bluffs. Construction on the 1,000 acre site is expected to begin immediately. The project was announced at an event yesterday in Council Bluffs that was attended by Google officials and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad.

Cloud Computing Hides Big Issues In Corporate Data Sharing

To many enterprise organizations cloud computing looks – appropriately enough – heaven sent. When a company has a business opportunity that demands more processing capacity, or new applications, or adding hundreds of new users, they can dial it up through their cloud computing service provider with slightly more effort than it takes to get lunch delivered. No capital expenses, no vast spikes in maintenance costs, no resource and skill requirements. The cloud is an IT service that helps business move faster, cheaper and smarter.

      Intel: Q4 Beats The Street
Intel posted better-than-expected fourth quarter results. The chipmaker reported revenue of $13.9 million, ahead of the Street at $13.72 billion; profits of 64 cents a share beat the Street at 61 cents. Revenue was up 22% from a year ago. Gross margin in the quarter was 65.5%, up from 64.8% a year ago. Operating income of $4.8 million was up 20% from a year ago; net income of $3.5 billion was up 11%. The company noted that revenue in Q4 was negatively impacted by floods in Thailand and the resulting supply shortages of hard drives. Intel said that the drive shortages reduced orders for microprocessors, but that the situation did not impact PC unit sales in the quarter “with demand trends playing out as expected.”

Storing Data In The Cloud Raises Compliance Challenges
For the past few years, cloud-based storage has oscillated somewhere between a replacement strategy for existing back-up storage solutions (i.e. tape) and a typically inexpensive but complex real-time storage solution for online web properties and enterprises. Much like the first waves of virtualization, many organizations are struggling to figure out where cloud storage fits within their existing IT infrastructure. Unlike basic server virtualization, and possibly more critical however, is the determination of if and when cloud storage is even legal. Cloud storage carries with it an extra layer of complexity: compliance.

The Road Ahead: Gartner's Outlook For 2012 And Beyond
Gartner this morning unveiled its list of predictions for the IT sector for 2012 and beyond. If everything they say happens, the IT landscape is going to look a lot different than it does now. For one thing, the weather will be...cloudier. Gartner also expects that the bubble in social networking will burst by 2013, and they see off-shore manufacturing coming back home. (Or at least closer.)

Defending Data Centers From Criminals And Hurricanes: What's Your Recovery Plan?
In the wake of new and escalating cybercrime threats to data centers around the world, and the seemingly increasingly violent natural disasters hitting regions every season, now seems to be the perfect time to review and revisit what’s working and what’s not in IT disaster recovery plans. For organizations lacking a true disaster recovery plan or business continuity plan – and according to recent research there are a quite a few of these out there – there’s never been a better time than the present. AFCOM, a non-partisan association for data center management with more than 4,500 members worldwide, recently conducted a survey of its members to uncover the status, success and shortcomings of today’s current disaster recovery and business recovery plans. AFCOM found some surprising and concerning results, including that more than 15 percent of data centers have no plan for business continuity or disaster recovery ...
