      Intel Lowers Forecast Because of Shortages
      The chip maker Intel Corp. said Monday that its fourth-quarter revenue would be lower than expected because of shortages of hard drives. Its shares tumbled more than 3 percent in early trading. Intel, a technology bellwether, said it now expected fourth-quarter revenue of $13.4 billion to $14 billion. It had previously forecast revenue of $14.2 billion to $15.2 billion for the holiday quarter. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting revenue of $14.65 billion. Intel is the world’s largest maker of microprocessors, the brains of computers. The company said it expected personal computer sales to be up from the previous quarter. But it said computer makers are reducing inventories and microprocessor purchases because of hard drive shortages.

      BlackBerry users experienced technical glitches with their smartphones for a second day after an unexplained problem cut off Internet and messaging services in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. The new round of troubles on Tuesday involved the BlackBerry’s popular messaging service which was not fully operational, with multiple users reporting issues in sending and receiving messages. Angry smartphone users posted on Twitter to vent frustration with the company and bemoan the loss of their messaging capabilities, questioning why the company took so long to restore services. A spokeswoman for Research in Motion, which makes the BlackBerry devices, was not immediately able to comment.

      The struggling wireless carrier Sprint Nextel said Friday that it would need to raise additional money to build a higher-speed data network, a move that sent its stock down 20 percent. Sprint also said it would stop selling phones and other devices compatible with Clearwire’s current network at the end of next year, after it switches on its own higher-speed, fourth-generation data network. Shares of Clearwire fell 32 percent after Sprint disclosed details of its new network. Sprint is Clearwire’s largest customer and majority owner, but does not control it.       Japanese Regulator Approves Google-Yahoo Deal
      Japan’s anti-monopoly watchdog approved on Thursday a tie-up between Google and the Yahoo Japan Corporation, but warned that it would keep checking for possible violations. The regulator, the Fair Trade Commission, said Thursday that it did not see any problems as long as the two companies continued to be separate and offered distinctive services. Yahoo Japan has said it planned to start a search service using Google’s search and advertising technology by the end of this year. The online shopping site Rakuten Inc. had asked the Fair Trade Commission to look into the deal, which was announced in July, to see if the partnership might hinder competition and growth in the Japanese Internet.
