AMD Open 3.0 Board Targets Energy-Hungry Data Centres

Advanced Micro Devices has rolled out a new server motherboard that complies with standards laid out by the Facebook-led Open Compute Project. Given the name AMD Open 3.0, the motherboard was formerly dubbed “Roadrunner”, and is designed to high performance and high energy efficiency, giving users greater flexibility in the data centre and a way to drive down costs around power, space and cooling, according to Bob Ogrey, technical cloud evangelist and AMD engineering fellow.

IDC Finds Slower Network Switch, Router Market In 3rd Quarter

The worldwide Ethernet switch market, which had grown in large part due to the adoption of 10 Gigabit Ethernet technology in the data centre, contracted in the third quarter, with revenue dropping 4.4 percent, according to analysts with IDC. Numbers issued by IDC on 30 November indicated that globally, Ethernet switch revenue came in at $5.36 billion (£3.32bn), a decrease from what the analysts called a “very strong” third quarter in 2011.

    3. Dell And Cisco See Server Growth

Dell And Cisco See Server Growth

Dell was the only top-tier server vendor in the third quarter to see sales gains in a server market that continues to see revenues decline, due in large part to an uncertain global economy, according to analysts with Gartner and IDC. In numbers released last week, Dell remained in the number-three position in terms of revenue – with growth between 8.2 percent and 10.3 percent compared with the same period last year – but saw its market share grow as leaders IBM and Hewlett-Packard saw sales decline, the analysts firms said. In addition, Dell and Cisco Systems, with its Unified Computing Systems (UCS) converged data centre product line, were the only ones in the top five to see server shipments increase, according to Gartner numbers.

Dell Challenges Cisco, HP With Converged Data Centre

Dell executives are leveraging recent acquisitions in the networking and storage space to deliver a converged data centre solution to compete with competing offerings like Cisco Systems’ successful Unified Computing System. Dell’s Converged Blade Data Centre combines Dell’s 12th Generation PowerEdge servers, new EqualLogic storage blade arrays and Force10 MXL blade switching to create a modular solution that fits within a single blade enclosure and is easy to manage, deploy and scale.

HP, Dell Roll Out ‘Bulldozer’ Servers

AMD is unveiling five new Opteron server chips – including two more 16-core processors – that the chip maker said will appear in systems from Hewlett-Packard and Dell. The new processors – three from the Opteron 6200 Interlagos and three from the Opteron 4200 Valencia portfolio – offer 100MHz of improved performance over current processors without increasing the power consumption, key attributes for target spaces like cloud computing, virtualisation and high-performance computing (HPC), where organisations are looking for better performance and energy efficiency.

Dell Seeks User Input For Future PowerEdge Servers

As Dell unveiled its twelfth generation PowerEdge servers earlier this year, officials were already talking with their customers about features needed for the thirteenth-generation systems, due out in 2014.

And as Dell customers now bring the new twelfth-generation tower, rack and blade PowerEdges into their data centre environments, Dell engineers will soon be working on prototypes of the next generations, which will go out to some users next year for testing.

Dell Adds 40GbE Network Switch To Portfolio

Dell continues to build up its networking arsenal with the news that it is using its acquisition last year of networking vendor Force10 Networks, to add new hardware and software to its open networking platform.

This includes a 40 Gigabit Ethernet-enabled switch for its PowerEdge M1000e blade system.

      Network Enhancements

Dell also is unveiling enhancements to its networking operating system and new management capabilities that offer greater automation and a single console for all management needs on new and existing Dell networking infrastructures.

The new and enhanced offerings were announced 24 April, and many will be on display at the Interop 2012 show in Las Vegas 7-10 May. Dell also will demonstrate its capabilities in the burgeoning area of software-defined networking (SDN), including interoperability with Big Switch Networks’ Open SDN architecture.

Google Data Centre Cooled By Bathtub Water

At Google’s data centre in Douglas County, Georgia, the company apparently is looking to be both fiscally and environmentally responsible. The search giant is using water from the toilets and bathtubs of neighboring communities to help cool the servers that are running inside the facility. Google, Facebook, Microsoft and other operators of massive data centres are always looking for ways to make their facilities more energy-efficient, primarily to drive down the skyrocketing costs of running these operations, as well as to lessen the impact these data centres have on the surrounding communities and their environments
