Data center energy management specialist Power Assure has closed a new round of funding, securing $13.5 million in Series B financing from an investor group led by strategic partner ABB and existing investors Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Good Energies, and Judith Point Capital.
The funding will be used to expand Power Assure’s sales and marketing operations and boost its investments in engineering, the company said.
Wurtz: Funding Brings Global Reach
“We are very pleased to have secured a new funding round led by our strategic partner ABB with reinvestments from our existing top-tier backers,” said Brad Wurtz, president and CEO of Power Assure. “This agreement deepens our partnership and brings Power Assure global reach and a well-established network of sales and support professionals with access to our target markets in the data center. This partnership and new financing will help us rapidly scale our business.”

VMware’s slow and steady attack on storage
Explore GigaOM (Aug 27 2011) Cloud Computing , Storage
VMware has transformed the enterprise computing model more than any other company in the past decade. Now, with the latest release of vSphere containing several new storage features, VMware is set to disrupt storage. Its parent company, EMC, and NetApp may want to stay alert.

Doubling Down on Scale-out Storage
Explore GigaOM (Apr 10 2010) Cloud Computing , Storage
NetApp this week agreed to acquire Bycast, whose storage virtualization is used for large-scale digital archives and storage clouds — yet another investment by a major systems provider in scale-out storage aimed at tackling the growth of unstructured data. But while big systems vendors realize they need a new approach to solve the workloads generated by the web, cloud and data-intensive applications, are they really ready to ride the commodity hardware cost curve embraced by large web and cloud providers?

Is Networking Gear the Last Stand Against Commoditization in the Data Center?

Brocade’s hanging of a “for sale” sign shines the spotlight on the one area of cloud and enterprise expansion that up until now has been largely overlooked: the network. Pick your model — cloud or enterprise — and it’s clear that while the list of server vendors is long, the single-source networking choices are few and far between. And as both cloud and enterprise markets move to commodity architectures that stress scale-out server approaches using IP and Ethernet networking, the importance of robust networking infrastructure becomes even greater. In the face of this transformation, will networking remain the last piece of the data center puzzle in which brand names still matter?

Is Virtualization a Cloud Prerequisite?
Explore GigaOM (Aug 30 2009) Cloud Computing
With the annual VMworld confab coming next week, we are bound to come away thinking that virtualization is the guiding light to take us to the promised land of cloud computing. The reality is different. Virtualization and cloud computing aren’t always the answer. But we are slowly learning what applications work best in different types [...] (Read Full Article)

Should Servers and Networking Come From a Single Source?
Explore GigaOM (Jun 25 2009) Networking , Servers , Storage
Data center hardware infrastructure can be roughly categorized into servers, networking and storage. But two of those areas are merging before our eyes, as Cisco and HP battle for server and network integration. The business and technical implications of this consolidation affect other companies and customers — and the dust isn’t likely to settle anytime soon.
Although Cisco fired the first shot with its Unified Computing System, HP has long held the keys to a successful server line and an equally successful — and often under-rated — ProCurve networking line. And while Cisco’s first server was chassis-based — akin to its current switch and router products, its most recent announcement includes support for 1U and 2U rack-mounted servers, the kind HP has been shipping for years, along with Dell, IBM, Supermicro, and many more.

DataDomain Gets NetApp Back in the Game
Explore GigaOM (May 24 2009) Cloud Computing , Storage
Bravo to NetApp for acquiring Data Domain. For too long, NetApp has been downright timid in the M&A department, all the while being run around in circles by rival EMC. But with this deal, the battle for storage leadership is heating up once again. Not only does it give NetApp access to a winning product line in a growth area of the storage market, but it signals the company might be taking a new approach to its acquisition strategy, one that could make them more competitive with EMC.
Data Domain helped launch the de-duplication industry, a critical segment of the storage market for retaining long-term data. By “de-duplicating” corporate data, particularly those terabytes destined for backup, Data Domain provided compression ratios that made its disk-based product a compelling choice over tape. It also made the integration model simple: Connect to your backup server where you used to have your ...
