Google, HP Raise Data-Center PUE Bar
Explore Network Computing (Apr 6 2012) Construction , Power and Cooling , Cloud Computing , Servers
Google once brashly believed that its engineers could invent a solution to the world's energy problems. These days, the company has a new strategy: finance less risky clean-energy projects where it can actually make an impact. Last year, Google invested more than ever in renewable power, spending $880 million to underwrite conventional clean-energy projects such as solar panels on California rooftops. But that isn't the role the company envisioned for itself in 2007, when cofounder and current CEO Larry Page declared that it would get into energy research directly, intending to "rapidly" invent cheap ways to generate "renewable electricity at globally significant scale."

Data Center Energy Efficiency Needs To Include Software And Networking, Expert Says
Explore Network Computing (Aug 22 2011) Cloud Computing , Networking , Servers
Enterprises have made great strides in improving the energy efficiency of processors, servers and storage technology, but an expert on eco-friendly IT says that attention also has to be paid to networking equipment and the addition of power management features to software. Lori Wigle, president of the IT industry-led Climate Savers Computing Initiative, spoke at a CIO conference on data center efficiency and cloud computing held last week near San Francisco.
The initiative was co-founded by Intel and Google, and includes tech industry giants such as Microsoft, VMware and Cisco Systems, as well as Dell and Samsung, which were co-sponsors of the conference. The group's goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions attributed to data center operations by 54 million tons a year. So far, the 4-year-old organization has reduced them by 32 million tons, says Wigle, who is also general manager of eco-technology at Intel.

HP Offers Service That Spots Inefficiencies In Data Center
Explore Network Computing (Aug 15 2011) Cloud Computing
HP on Monday introduced a new service to help enterprises improve the efficiency of their data centers by automating the process of identifying where applications are running and on what IT assets. The purpose of the HP Discovery and Dependency Mapping Service for Data Center Transformation is on how to redesign the data center for optimal operational efficiency, especially as companies implement virtualization and cloud computing technology.
The Discovery and Dependency Mapping (DDM) service automates what, for some, is an expensive and time-consuming manual process, said Jimmy Augustine, group product marketing manager within HP Software. That manual process is prone to errors and may not produce an accurate report on how the data center is operating. Most data center managers are confident that they’re aware of about 80 percent of what they have, but “it’s the other 20 percent that really keeps them up at night,” he said.

JouleX Updates Software For Emerging ECEM Market
Explore Network Computing (Jan 11 2011) Monitoring , Servers
Energy management software maker JouleX on Jan. 10 is introducing JouleX Energy Manager (JEM) version 2.5, which helps control energy use within IT systems and includes the addition of a smart phone application for remote control of those systems. The software product joins a growing market for what the research firm Forrester describes as Enterprise Carbon and Energy Management (ECEM) software.
JEM 2.5 is a network-based, agent-less, energy management system, which means monitors do not have to be installed on each server, router or PC on the network. JEM 2.5 monitors, analyzes and manages energy usage by raising or lowering energy consumption based on network traffic, workload, time of day and other factors. JEM 2.5 also integrates with leading data center management tools such as Cisco Systems' EnergyWise, Intel's Data Center Manager and VMWare's vCenter.

Interop: Dog Fooding IT
Explore Network Computing (Apr 28 2010)
Interop is like a box of chocolates and my chocolates are filled with nuts. I spend the better part of my day talking with vendors about their product plans and what I see happening in IT and the market. My view doesn't always jibe with what they see in the market. Whether it's Cisco who still hasn't deployed NAC too deeply, HP who is crowing about their all-HP data center, or F5 who was also bitten by McAfee's dat-file debacle last week, it's good to remember that these companies are themselves IT shops and they feel the pain of supporting users.

Interop Data Center Chair Doug Washburn On Data Center Strategy
Explore Network Computing (Apr 9 2010) Cloud Computing
It's no secret that the recession has had an impact on IT, but business demands march on. The longer IT projects are put on hold, the increase in that pent-up demand is going to force companies to move plans forward anyway, but with limited funds, says Doug Washburn, an analyst at Forrester Research and the chair of Interop's Data Center conference track. Whether you are consolidating data centers, building a private cloud, interested in cost savings and green IT or simply keeping current on new technologies, architectures and business drivers for building data centers, the Data Center conference track will have something for you. We asked Washburn what he sees as the hurdles and opportunities in data centers for 2010 and 2011 and how that is reflected in the track sessions.

Humana Builds A Twenty-First Century Data Center For Healthcare
Explore Network Computing (Feb 1 2010) Cloud Computing , Servers
Healthcare costs face national scrutiny--and healthcare companies are responding with green data centers designed to deliver lower capital and operating expenses (CAPEX and OPEX).They are doing this by systematically reducing energy costs and by virtualizing away hardware and the costly software licensing fees that go with it. A case in point is Louisville, Kentucky-based Humana, Inc., a Fortune 200 corporation that employs 23,500 associates to market its health benefit consumer services in 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. Humana decided in the mid-2000s to proceed with a green data center build that would not only deliver hard dollar savings over the long haul, but also be well-positioned for a business that has nearly tripled to 11.5 million participants over the past few years, making Humana the second largest Medicare prescription drug carrier in the United States and the most rapidly growing U.S. Medicare Advantage ...

Energy-Efficient datacenter Designs
Explore Network Computing (Nov 17 2009) Cloud Computing , Servers
Remember those green aspirations you had? How you'd do your bit to save the planet by re-engineering your IT operations for power efficiency? Don't worry, no one else remembers, either. But the fact remains, most data centers are still power-sucking cost centers and represent an opportunity for IT to save the company some cash. A 2007 Environmental Protection Agency report states that about half of electrical costs in data centers goes to powering environmentals like lights, fans, and compressors. That jibes with what Paul Jacobson, principal of data center consultancy Reliable Resources, is seeing. He says organizations typically spend between 45% and 55% of annual electrical expenses on cooling their data centers, making them prime targets for optimization and cost reduction.
