Growth In Private Cloud Adoption Continues To Rise
Explore da.feedsportal.com (Jan 24 2012) Cloud Computing
The adoption of private cloud technology keeps going and going. In December, Cloud hosting company Softlayer reported that it had record-setting growth for its private cloud deployments, almost doubling revenue in the process.
Another example is DynamicOps, a cloud services provider that has seen some 300 percent growth in the private cloud market through 2011.
Record growth
While Softlayer and DynamicOps are the latest example of rapidly-growing cloud services companies, they are by no means the only one. Many other services vendors are claiming that 2011 has been a banner year for growth. INetU, a managed hosting provider, reported that it added a sixth data centre last summer to support demand for cloud services and expanding its property holdings by 144 percent in 2011 in anticipation of additional growth.

The Cloud And The Client: Apple’s Green Dilemma
Explore da.feedsportal.com (Dec 14 2011) Fossil Fuel
Last week’s story that Apple may be planning a data centre in Oregon, near Facebook’s controversial location, may turn out to be a rumour, or may be reality. Either way, it was a timely reminder that consumerisation and the cloud are changing the way tech companies are judged on environmental issues.
Apple has had a poor rating from environmental campaigners in recent years, largely because of a lack of transparency about the environmental impact of its consumer products. This has been changing somewhat as it opens up slightly, and Apple sits somewhere in the middle of Greenpeace’s latest consumer IT rankings
A cloud hanging over all green IT?
However the arrival of the cloud changes things. When Apple first launched its iPad, Greenpeace was quick to respond that more client devices with higher expectations of data and connectivity, use more energy and create more emissions.
It is ...

Telehouse has sourced 100 percent sustainable electricity for its Docklands data centre hosting site
Telehouse, a data centre outsourcing company, has gone completely over to green energy in its London facilities. The 100 percent renewable power has been sourced from SmartestEnergy.
The data centre provider currently houses just under 500 major international companies at its London Docklands premises. By purchasing its energy requirements from SmartestEnergy, Telehouse is assured that the electricity is bought from independent generators of hydroelectric, wind, solar and anaerobic-digestion sources.

Cloud computing did not exist when data protection regulation came into force. John Roberts of Redstone explains how to keep within the law
The UK Data Protection Act (DPA) is often regarded as the world’s leading law on protecting personal data. But many UK companies now adopting cloud services are not only putting data at risk, but also themselves, by breaching data protection laws. How do you comply with the DPA, whilst maintaining a cloud presence?
When the UK government passed the DPA in 1998 it was heralded as the definitive way to guarantee personal data was protected. Over the following decade, refinements to the act ensured that personal data was not just secure, but more specifically, it was secure online. This worked well when data was held on-premise, within a company’s own data centre, but the advent of cloud technology has changed all that.

Promoters of greener data center operations use business cases to persuade Allstate's real estate group and the rest of the company "to get behind our actions," Abbattista says. "We are a collection of socially conscious engineers and business ...

GreenQloud Carbon-Neutral Data Centre Moves Into Beta
Explore da.feedsportal.com (Oct 2 2010) Fossil Fuel , Geothermal , Storage
GreenQloud has laid plans to open what it claims to be the world’s first carbon-neutral cloud service. The service is entering beta testing at the moment and will go live at the end of the first quarter 2011.
The data centre only uses renewable energy provided by the geothermal springs and hydropower available at the centre’s location in Iceland. Eirkur Hrafnsson, GreenQloud’s CEO and co-founder, claimed that this location also makes it possible for companies based in Europe and America to have a common data centre. This would avoid moving data across frontiers and would be cheaper than having to source facilities in two or more countries.

Intel Ponders Atom-Based Computing Clusters

Intel has confirmed that while it is not looking to position Atom in the mainstream server market, it is considering compute clusters of smaller, Atom-based devices. An Intel executive has reportedly confirmed that the chip giant is not interested in pushing its energy-efficient Atom processor for the server space.
Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Data Centre Group, said in an interview with IDG News that while there are some vendors that are using Atom chips in server designs, and chip designer ARM is looking to push its processor designs into the data centre, most businesses are looking for systems with the power and energy efficiency of the latest Xeon chips.

Capgemini has magically turned its Merlin green data centre technology into a marketable package. The modules used to build Capgemini’s Merlin data centre in Swindon can be used to create a low-cost, scalable centre in any available space, the company claims. It is now hoping to create a new generation of mini data centres, according to Paul Anderson, programme director of Outsourcing Services at Capgemini UK.
The modules are mobile, self-contained units that are 95 percent recyclable. The ones used in Merlin were built off-site and transported to the warehouse that Capgemini acquired in Swindon.

Autonomous search is Google's next step in bringing information to the users, instead of making them seek it, said Google CEO Eric Schmidt at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference. Google CEO Eric Schmidt said the symbiotic relationship between humans and computers is driving the search engine to work on autonomous search, where users receive search suggestions on their mobile phone without having to type any queries.
Schmidt, speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, said that while the Google Instant predictive search technology helps shave an average of two seconds off users’ queries, the next step is autonomous search.

Up To 5,000 Firms Could Face CRC Fines Next Week
Explore da.feedsportal.com (Sep 22 2010) Carbon Reduction Commitment
Around 5,000 businesses and public sector organisations have yet to register for the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme, according to on365, an infrastructure and utility specialist. With the deadline looming at the end of next week, fines of up to £45,000 on each organisation could be levied.
A further hazard is that the Environment Agency’s application process and checks take up to four weeks. That means that companies applying today could still miss the cut-off date. Companies failing to submit in time face an immediate £5,000 fee and an additional charge of £500 per day, capped at £45,000.

Yahoo is investing heavily in updating its entire platform, including redesigning its home page, strengthening the overall site engine, and building more data centres. Yahoo announced upgrades in its web products that it hopes will help it to regain some lustre. The company wants to boost its user base because numbers have been either flat or slowly slipping, depending on which researcher is to be believed. Despite its intentions, the venerable web-services provider, still one of the most relied-upon web sites in the world, didn’t show analysts and media all that much at its Product Runway event at its corporate headquarters. Mainly, the message was that the company is spending heavily to improve its platform and services.
Within the next few weeks, Yahoo’s home page will add update access to Twitter, Facebook, and Zynga (social gaming), so that users can file updates to any of those sites without ...
