Google Network Architects Present Efficient Enterprise Data Center Using InfiniBand
Explore Yahoo! Finance (Jun 29 2010) Cloud Computing
During a recent presentation at the ACM IEEE International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA), scientists from Google, Inc. (Google) proposed an energy proportional data center using a unique Butterfly Topology architecture built with 40Gb/s InfiniBand switches and adapters. By taking advantage of the inherent flexibility of the InfiniBand interconnect (from 2.5Gb/s to 40Gb/s per port) to optimize data center utilization and minimize power consumption, the proposed InfiniBand network demonstrated an 85 percent reduction in power.
“The proposal for a high-performance enterprise data center built on InfiniBand is a logical step for this technology. Mellanox InfiniBand technology reduces power consumption in the datacenter to maximize energy efficiency thus driving a higher overall return-on-investment for businesses across multiple markets,” said Eyal Waldman, chairman, president and CEO of Mellanox Technologies (NASDAQ: MLNX - News) (TASE: MLNX). “As the InfiniBand industry-leader, we see this proposal as evidence of expansion of InfiniBand ...

Energy consumption is one of the leading drivers of operating expenses for both fixed and mobile network operators. Reliable access to electricity is limited in many developing countries that are currently the high-growth markets for telecommunications. At the same time, many operators have adopted corporate social responsibility initiatives with a goal of reducing their networks' carbon footprints, and network infrastructure vendors are striving to gain competitive advantage by reducing the power requirements of their equipment. All of these factors will continue to converge over the next several years, creating significant market potential for greener telecom networks.
These market drivers are manifesting themselves in several ways within the global telecom industry. The large equipment vendors are creating highly-efficient network elements that consume far less power than in previous hardware generations.
