The Business Aspects of Cloud: Let's Get Started
Explore SOA World Magazine (23 hours, 32 min ago) Cloud Computing
I’ve spent the last several weeks addressing some of the business aspects of cloud and why/how companies move to the cloud. It’s time now to wrap this series up. The cloud discussions have been changing rapidly over the last months, focusing away from infrastructure to applications, services and industry requirements.

Implementations in larger companies typically started with development & test activities within the IT department, while business teams used “shadow-IT” approaches to source services from external parties, potentially putting the enterprise at risk. Cloud computing already has trimmed some businesses' IT costs. But a report found that it also could be the next big thing to help reduce their energy use, according to greenbiz.com The fourth annual Energy Efficient IT Report - by technology products and services seller CDW - calls cloud computing a possible "game changer" that's playing a growing role in energy efficiency. For the report, CDW surveyed 760 people working in private businesses, nonprofits, schools and governments. Of these respondents, 62 percent agreed that cloud computing is an energy-efficient way to consolidate data centers.

Cloud Expo Keynote: The Era of Open Clouds Is Upon Us
Explore SOA World Magazine (May 10 2012) Cloud Computing
Last year, cloud computing pundits predicted that 2012 would be the year when the clouds would open. They were right as cloud computing enthusiasts all over are embracing the open ecosystem; however, denying one vendor the right to serve as the de facto API is only the tip of the iceberg of this computing climate change.
In his Day 3 Keynote at the 10th International Cloud Expo, John Engates, CTO of Rackspace, will discuss the open ecosystem and how, ultimately, winning cloud technologies will be based on the ecosystem they represent.

Disruptive Technology from the Desktop to the Data Center
Explore SOA World Magazine (Jan 27 2012) Construction , Solar , Cloud Computing
According to Wikipedia, a disruptive technology or disruptive innovation is an innovation that helps create a new market and value network, and eventually goes on to disrupt an existing market and value network (over a few years or decades), displacing an earlier technology. The term is used in business and technology literature to describe innovations that improve a product or service in ways that the market does not expect, typically first by designing for a different set of consumers in the new market and later by lowering prices in the existing market. Virtualization and software design have been the main drivers in the development of disruptive innovations in hardware.

Specialty Cloud and the Rise of the Green Data Center
Explore SOA World Magazine (Jun 28 2011) Cloud Computing , Networking
Last week I had a brief meeting with Yoram Heller of hot cloud player Morphlabs and we talked about the next wave of cloud innovations. Of particular interest was the concept of specialized software suites that ride on top of the commoditized cloud platforms that have so far captured most of the popular interest in cloud computing.
It is possible, if indeed likely, that most forms of dedicated hardware or appliances in the network will be replaced by powerful instances, workloads and or/ boutique platforms that transcend the physical and technical boundaries that have been in place since the rise of the enterprise network.

Data Centers: The Next Wave of IT Innovation
Explore SOA World Magazine (Jun 14 2011) Power and Cooling , Emissions , Cloud Computing
The data center is the factory of the new cloud economy and is a major inflection point for enterprise profitability. Those who deliver the most apps, services, etc. per kilowatt/hour have a competitive advantage. And with data centers accounting for close to 1.5% of electricity consumption in the U.S., increasing energy efficiency in the data center is becoming a strategic business and community imperative.Cooling is the other major area where energy savings are being achieved. Where geography and climate permit, data center owners and operators are taking advantage of free cooling via airside and water side economization.
