Missed Opportunities in Data Center Energy Efficiency
Explore govwin.com (Sep 23 2011) Cloud Computing , Servers
So we are approaching the magic singularity of the massively consolidated data center. I just don’t know which singularity it is? In 2005, the Department of Energy (DOE) report on data center energy use could be extrapolated to assume that data centers would consume 100% of domestic energy production by late in the century. Other pundits have predicted that the complexity of the computer would approach that of the human brain. I’m more impressed by initiatives that reduce energy consumption and energy costs.
Presently we are obsessed with replacing agency computational server and storage silos with centralized solutions. Whether these are consolidated data centers (a business strategy) or cloud solutions (a service delivery strategy) the challenge is the same – implementing best-practices in both data center design and data center operations.
