Intel unveils energy-efficient 48-core chip
Explore PC World (Dec 2 2009) Servers
Intel is honing its sights on many-core chips that are far more powerful than today's dual and quad-core processors.
As expected, Intel has taken a big step in that direction by unveiling a 48-core research chip that it says is 10 to 20 times more powerful than current the top end offering in its multi-core Core line of processors. Intel also noted that the experimental chip uses the same amount of energy as two household light bulbs.
With its eye on the data centre and the cloud, Intel built fully functional cores in the new chip as part of what it calls its "terascale" mission.
"With a chip like this, you could imagine a cloud data center of the future which will be an order of magnitude more energy efficient than what exists today, saving significant resources on space and power costs," said Justin Rattner, Intel CTO and head ...

Researchers speed up the chase for cooler data centers
Explore PC World (Jun 11 2009) Carbon Tax , Cloud Computing , Servers
With energy costs rising and data centers at the core of IT strategy for many companies, cooling the growing number of computers jammed into data centers is an issue that has taken center stage.
Some innovative university researchers are focusing on cutting the cost of cooling the hot racks of servers in data centers. Last month, Syracuse University teamed with IBM to create one of the world's most efficient data centers on the school's campus, while the Georgia Institute of Technology announced last week that its faculty had created a 1,100-square-foot testing facility where researchers can test new cooling designs and measure the impact that the designs have on power efficiency.
