Google is obviously a major data center operator, so when the company talks, people listen.
Well, Bill Weihl, green energy czar at Google, was talking recently about the company’s green data center initiatives early this week at Green: Net 2010 in San Francisco.
Of course, he mentioned how and why the search giant requested permission from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to buy and sell power. (It got the ...

The recent volcanic activity in Iceland that has put a halt to air traffic to and from many European countries has also elicited communication from communications industry types, who are discussing the issues with locating data centers in the vicinity.

A recent report from Greenpeace talks about how cloud computing is driving companies like Facebook and Google to make ever-larger investments in data centers, many of which it says are being powered by “dirty coal”.
Here’s one excerpt:
“For example, in January 2010, Facebook commissioned a new data centre in Oregon and committed to a power service provider agreement with PacificCorp, a utility that gets the majority of its ...

Orange you glad you learned about this security system? By Paula Bernier

If the virtualization space followed the Department of Homeland Security’s color-coded scheme, it would probably be within the yellow range at best. Maybe even in the orange.
Yellow stands for “elevated”. Orange is “high”.
So this is not good news. But that’s not to say virtualization itself leads to security problems.
"Virtualization is not inherently insecure," says Neil MacDonald, vice president and a fellow with research and consulting ...

My husband and I are often perplexed as we drive around town and see empty strip malls while at the same time developers create new buildings – sometimes right across the street – in the same towns. Virtualization is great for the savings it can produce in terms of hardware, real estate and power usage. And it delivers a more environmentally friendly solution, as compared with traditional architectures that require a separate server for each application. However, this new virtualization architecture can mean a 1:1 radio between each virtual machine and each virtual switch within a server. And that switching can take up a fair amount ...

The data center space is seeing a lot of consolidation – meaning both the combination of multiple data center locations into mega sites and the aggregation of various applications on single servers. In most non-virtualized enterprise data center environments, servers are under-utilized, with most of them operating at 5 to 15 percent of their capacity, Rahul Singh, principal at Pace Harmon, a third-party outsourcing advisory and technology consulting firm, tells me.
“This is, in large part, due to applications having dedicated server and storage hardware, thus requiring more power, cooling, network and real estate,” he says.
