    2. Smart Racks: The Deep End of the Pool

Smart Racks: The Deep End of the Pool

Many data centers have grown larger and more complex in recent years as the trend has been towards data center consolidation. With increasing size and complexity, there is an increased need to drive intelligence to the domain of IT devices.

A data center, whether a room or an entire building, is all about what is happening at the rack. Obviously, this is where the actual computing is taking place. It is also where the vast majority of the power is being consumed, or should be. It is the web of communications within the data center, within the organization and for communications with the rest of the world. If this kingdom of IT is not properly protected and maintained there can be very serious consequences.

Growth in cloud computing increases demand for data centers worldwide

Data center infrastructure management (DCIM) is the integration of IT and facilities management to enable seamless monitoring of all systems across IT and facility infrastructures to improve the data center energy efficiency. DCIM is driven by power consumption, heat densities, virtualization, and consolidation of data centers, cloud computing, and increasing dependency on IT systems. With increasing demand in data center virtualization, enterprise migration into private clouds and optimization of operational costs, DCIM market has emerged as the key market for IT and facilities management vendors. Growth in cloud computing and enterprise virtualizations increases demand for data centers, which leads to new and innovative technologies to reduce power consumption and reduce cost of ownership for managing the data center infrastructure, worth millions of dollars. This growth is expected to accelerate within the next five years benefiting information technology as well as facilities vendors. DCIM software products will include a variety of ...

Raritan’s Power IQ 2.0 Energy Management Software Helps Data Center Managers ...
The new version of Power IQ introduces advanced energy saving technologies for data center managers; enabling them to safely meet new industry-recommended temperature settings and remotely shut down underutilized servers. Raritan today introduced a major release of its award-winning Power IQ® Energy Management software that helps data center and lab managers better understand environmental conditions at the rack in order to use power and cooling resources optimally without compromising performance. Power IQ 2.0 provides Thermal Analytics for monitoring rack temperatures based on industry guidelines, including ASHRAE's (American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) guidelines* that recommend the upper temperature limit in a data center be increased by 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit to 80.6 degrees. Power IQ provides a comprehensive solution to: inform users if a data center or lab is within these recommendations and how much energy could be saved by increasing temperature to meet these ...

      SharkRack, Raritan Partner on Power
Data center equipment manufacturer SharkRack will partner with Raritan Inc. to provide customers better insight and control of energy usage at the device level, the companies said Tuesday. The new partnership is targeting organizations seeking to optimize power management for Cisco networking switches and blade servers from a variety of manufacturers. SharkRack plans to add Raritan cabinet distribution units (CDUs) into its T2 and Integrity line cabinets as a bundled product, and will also be adding Raritan products to its stand-alone lines. The combined solution will provide organizations with power information on individual servers and other devices, as well as rack-level temperature data, the companies said. The solution also enables remote shutdown of IT equipment, which can help companies implement energy policies, such as turning off specific servers when not in use.
