The time-tested model where CIOs could count their servers and dole out the space on those machines to the neediest business units is being replaced by a dynamic and much more virtual approach.
The goal is to provision and re-provision services as needed by an increasingly complex enterprise that includes everything from multiple types of cloud computing--internal, external, secure and non-secure--to social networking and mission-critical applications. But flexibility comes at a significant cost. It's now harder to keep track of all the devices accessing corporate data, and it's much, much more difficult to keep track of the data.
Forbes caught up with Bob Gleichauf, chief technology officer for Cisco's ( CSCO - news - people ) wireless security technology group, to talk about these changes.
